WPFD unveils redesigned monument plaza

On Memorial Day, the West Paterson Fire Department held a rededication ceremony of its Firemen’s Monument, which is located at McBride Avenue and Memorial Drive.

Company #2 1st Lt. Michael Herrmann came up with the idea of including engraved paver stones with names of past and present firefighters. He reached out to anyone who has ever been a WP firefighter. Families from around the country submitted names and 226 engraved stones lay in the plaza. In addition, a special monument was added which consists of the names of all the Department’s chiefs.

“Once you are a member of this organization, you are always a part of this organization,” said Fire Chief Paul Salomone.

The Department recognized the late Chief George Moussab, who helped design and erect the monument in 1962, and the late department Chaplin Father John Piccione, who both had plaques added to the monument and unveiled at the event.

Over the years, Department companies had been assigned the duty to maintain the grounds. Following that, the grounds were maintained by Nicholas Vander Voort, who handed it down to Bill Broadfield, who maintains the site today.
