When Do I Need to See a Podiatrist or Ankle or Foot Pain?

Our feet are crucial for our general well-being; however, they can cause big problems, each step you take involves a remarkably intricate network of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Pain and discomfort in our feet can change the way we walk, creating a domino effect that can result in problems with the knees, hips and the back. This in turn can significantly affect our quality of life.

Sports and physical activity can cause our feet to hurt or become numb. Exercising too fast or too long without warming up properly can set you up for painful or numbing injuries.

Excess weight puts extra stress on your feet and poorly fitting shoes and other footwear are common causes of foot problems as well. Health problems can also affect the feet. Lack of feeling in your feet could be a sign of a serious illness, such as a diabetes or a nerve disorder

If your ankle or foot pain shows certain symptoms you should schedule an appointment with a Podiatrist as soon as possible.  Severe pain that is accompanied by swelling could be a sign of infection internally that could advance to a very serious condition if not treated effectively.  An infection is indicated by redness, heat, and tenderness in the ankle or foot. You could also have a fever of more than 100 degrees. If your ankle or foot has an open sore or is severely deformed, you should get medical help immediately.  If you are unable to stand on your foot or walk without assistance, contact a podiatrist.
