The Fine Grind: Not Your Average Coffee Shop

The Fine Grind: Not Your Average Coffee Shop

The Fine Grind Coffee Bar (TFG) has always said it is “YOUR neighborhood coffee shop” because it is more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee. TFG prides itself on being a home-away-from-home for the residents of Little Falls and neighboring towns. Besides providing outstanding coffee, creative comfort food and friendly service, the cozy, unpretentious atmosphere welcomes guests to relax, socialize, meet up with friends and even get some work done.

TFG opened its original location on Main Street, Little Falls in June 2005. The business outgrew that small space after four years and moved around the corner to their current location in the Farnese Plaza on Newark Pompton Turnpike. The Fine Grind became popular for fresh roasted organic fair-trade coffees, gourmet loose leaf teas and creative beverage concoctions such as “The Vanilla Snuggle” latte and their signature “FroHo®” (frozen hot chocolate). Besides the extensive beverage menu, customers also find it hard to resist the tasty desserts and pastries. There is always a glass jar of fresh baked chocolate chunk cookies and gooey cinnamon rolls on display to tempt your sweet tooth.

What really sets The Fine Grind apart from the competition is their innovative food menu with table service. Popular menu items are the homemade hummus platters, Italian grilled cheese made with fresh bruschetta, and egg sandwiches on fresh bagel sticks that are delivered daily from the Bronx, NY. It has always been important to the owners of The Fine Grind to have something on the menu for everyone so dietary restrictions are not an issue! They have plenty of gluten free and vegan options and also offer a variety of milk substitutes for those who are dairy free.

The success of The Fine Grind over the past 14 years can be attributed to their amazing and loyal customers and TFG’s involvement in community both inside and outside of the café. “I believe that the most important part of owning a business in a small town is being involved and giving back to the community,” says Rhonda Mallek, owner of The Fine Grind. TFG hosts live music events, monthly art exhibits and seminars that appeal to a variety of interests and causes. It is also common to see them at local school and town events selling coffee and pastries or giving away tasty samples.

June happens to be a very exciting month at The Fine Grind as they are celebrating “Pride Month” in a big way. “The Fine Grind employs many individuals who identify within the LGBTQ community. I personally have become more aware of the struggle young people may deal with regarding their own identity and feeling comfortable with who they are,” says Mallek. “I want to create a safe space and help spread awareness in order to make a better life for those who are dealing with being accepted for their sexual orientation or gender identity issues.”

As part of the TFG’s Pride celebration, the Equality FroHo®, a white frozen hot chocolate with rainbow sprinkles, will be the featured beverage for the month. One dollar for each Equality FroHo® sold in June will be donated to the Hendrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the nation’s largest LGBTQ Youth Services Organization. The monthly art exhibit for June will feature artwork created by adolescents in collaboration with HMI and there will also be featured educational events throughout the month sponsored by organizations such as HMI, Trans Lifeline, and No More Dysphoria.

HMI provides services and programs for LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24 and their families.

Trans Lifeline is a national trans-led organization dedicated to improving the quality of trans lives by responding to the critical needs of the trans community with direct service, material support, advocacy, and education. Their vision is to fight the epidemic of trans suicide and improve overall life-outcomes of trans people by facilitating justice-oriented, collective community aid.

No More Dysphoria is a local organization whose primary goal is to help transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals pay for different parts of their transitions.

The schedule for these events will be posted on The Fine Grind’s social media. Check out their Facebook and Instagram feeds for up to date information.

One more important event is happening at The Fine Grind in June! Everyone is invited to join The Fine Grind in celebrating 14 years of being “YOUR neighborhood coffee shop” at the annual Birthday Bash on Saturday, June 15th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Events of the day include live music, free birthday cake and fun giveaways just for stopping by (while supplies last)!
