Macular Degeneration Awareness Month: Pearls and Tips

Macular Degeneration Awareness Month: Pearls and Tips

Did you know that February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month?
Macular Degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness. Several million Americans have
it, but many don’t know they do. The risk factors for Macular Degeneration include family history,
certain ethnic backgrounds, smoking, poor nutrition, sun and UV exposure.
What can we do about it? We conduct thorough eye exams and check your family history,
vision, retinal appearance; you may require further tests including various retinal testing and imaging
techniques. Intervention includes easy solutions like multivitamins (AREDS-type), sunglasses, certain
retinal therapies and injections. Treatments depend on the individual patient.
What can you do about it? You can tell us your family history, come in for your annual
comprehensive eye exam, and tell your family to be examined by an eye doctor, especially if they are at
risk, too.
EyeCare Consultants of NJ (ECC-NJ) has partnered with the American Academy of
Ophthalmology (AAO) to highlight the importance of Macular Degeneration. The best way to treat
Macular Degeneration is to detect it.
