Science teacher Ms. Richeall Kennedy introduced a new experiment for her chemistry students this past week. The students created edible water bottles out of certain elements mixed with water.
During the experiment, students mixed 5 grams of calcium lactate with 4 cups of water. The students were instructed to bring their own flavoring to put in the mixture.
By the end of the mixing process, the mixture was an edible, jelly-like orb that the students were able to taste. Once popped into your mouth, these orbs released a burst of water (or flavoring) from the mixture.
Prior to the experiment, Ms. Kennedy gave her students a lesson on the importance of seaweed to the environment. This was because one of the elements used in the experiment, alginate, originated from seaweed, which is a nutritious ingredient in many foods
and beverages. She wanted to make sure her students were able to recognize just how significant seaweed is in the environment. “Seaweed production can contribute to the end of world hunger and help the climate,” Ms. Kennedy explained.
While being introduced to an invigorating, new project, the students were also being introduced into the world of chemical engineering.
PV is ahead of the trend toward more topical and environmentally conscious experiments like this one. Using less plastic is important for the environment, so creating non-plastic, edible water orbs is one way to lessen the reliance on plastic products.
